New Democracy Art: A Model of Self-Definition.

‘New Democracy Art’™ is created by indigenous artists in the world’s emerging democracies, who are living through the political transformations within their national homeland. Creative women and men are expressing experiences of this transition in their own best visual language, using their hand formed works of art. Their personal art has made entry into the public domain, and is no longer produced to serve only ritual, personal or domestic purpose. In response to the external pressures from a global viewing populous, this neighborhood art must now also serve a nationalistic end and a commodity purpose as well.

‘New Democracy Art’™ ebbs away from the traditional, known cultural images in stages, and incorporates the novel cultural imagery with the known over time, forming unique new designs and practices. As the life condition shifts from a state of oppression into a state of freedom and democratic self-definition, the artistic, expressive, responsive forms in all media, resulting from such liberation throughout all levels of cultural life become the embodiment of ‘New Democracy Art’™. By moving forward, as well as reclaiming the art forms, patterns and meanings from the ancestors, this new art expresses the indigenous group’s journey through centuries of confinement, and now, from a democratic perspective, it visually defines who they know themselves to be, and how they express their place in this 21st century world.

Gauging the progress of a nation's movement along the path to Democracy is expressed by the art conceived by its people.
